Companies in mechanical and plant engineering and related industries like automotive and electrical engineering have achieved a leading position in global markets. In order to stay competitive and successful in the future, it is no longer sufficient to rely on technical advantages or excellent quality of a product or a service offered to the market. It is rather important to design innovative and holistic business models in the course of strategic product development. Business models provide a holistic view on business activities which are necessary for the development and marketing of products or services. A compelling approach, providing continuous support for companies in business model design in the early phases of product development is missing. In addition, many companies are challenged by consistently implementing a business model. Thus, the aim of this thesis is an approach to design business model, product concept and production system concept integratively. First, business ideas are developed. For a selected business idea, options are determined, enabling a company to develop proactively its business activities. Thereto competition, environment and the business idea itself have to be analyzed. Identified options are documented in a catalogue of variables. Using a consistency and cluster analysis, consistent business models are developed out of the determined options. Afterwards, the most promising business model is selected. Finally, a guideline is created to summarize information and measures relevant for the implementation. The approach is described using an example of the electrical connectivity business.
