Abstract
Social media platforms (SMPs) increasingly transform digital communication between organizations and their current and potential customers. Their growing strategic relevance provides new opportunities for brand building, customer engagement and relationship management, while simultaneously requiring organizations to effectively manage a fragmented platform landscape characterized by different technological affordances, use expectations and practices. Despite numerous research contributions, an integrated understanding of how organizations account for platform-specific differences and strategically leverage affordances within diverse socio-cultural contexts remains limited. Against this backdrop, this dissertation investigates how organizations – particularly B2B and B2C companies and their respective social media managers – can strategically select, utilize and manage SMPs. Guided by three research objectives, the dissertation develops a comprehensive perspective on social media management. By combining affordance theory, affordance actualization, socio-cultural contexts and use expectations and practices, it provides new insights into platform differences, user behavior and strategic management practices. The results demonstrate how affordances, user behavior and organizational objectives interact. By developing a process model for social media marketing and management and identifying relevant sub-affordances, this dissertation contributes to a deeper understanding of how effective and context-sensitive social media strategies can be developed and managed.
