TY - CHAP AB - In this chapter, I aim to review methods for testing early social cognitive abilities, in particular the assessment of Level 1 perspective-taking (VPT-1) in the visual modality, as it plays a predictive role in understanding the epistemic states of others. To some extent, in the literature, tests of VPT-1 are uncritically reported and replicated without questioning the validity and significance of the results. However, the use of behavioural measures with very young children remains a challenging task, as children draw on many pragmatic resources in a test situation, such as cross-situational interactional experience. In this chapter, I attempt to provide an initial review and interpretation of previous findings from a pragmatic perspective.
