Zusammenfassung
Fokalisierung befasst sich mit der Perspektivübernahme und der Repräsentation von Subjektivität in Erzählungen. Der narratologische Diskurs um Fokalisierung bietet eine umfassende Konzeptualisierung und Neukonfiguration dieses Begriffs. Seit Beginn seiner Einführung als Konzept vor etwa fünfzig Jahren wurde der Begriff Fokalisierung auf verschiedene Medien angewendet, unter anderem auch auf grafische Narrative. Der multimodale Charakter grafischer Narrative stellt eine besondere Herausforderung für die Fokalisierung in Bezug darauf dar, wie sich Subjektivität zur visuellen Repräsentation einer fiktiven Wahrnehmungsweise verhält. Diese Dissertation betrachtet Fokalisierung als ein kognitives Konzept und führt ein Annotationssystem ein, das den Begriff für empirische Analysen nutzbar macht. Darüber hinaus werden statistische Tests und Dateninterpretationen – unterstützt durch einen Korpus grafischer Narrative – durchgeführt, um die Anwendbarkeit des Begriffs im Hinblick auf Leseprozesse zu untersuchen. Die Ergebnisse werden mit der bestehenden Theorie verglichen, wodurch die Narratologie mit empirischer Methodologie zusammengeschlossen wird. Die Analyse der Fokalisierung als kognitives Konzept dient als Fallstudie für eine experimentelle Narratologie, in der die in dieser Dissertation unternommenen Schritte auch auf andere narratologische Bestandteile in grafischen Narrativen angewendet werden können. Die Dissertation plädiert abschließend für einen neuen Ansatz in der Erzähltheorie, der Erkenntnisse aus etablierter Terminologie und der Analyse von Leseprozessen weiterentwickelt.
Abstract
Focalization is concerned with perspective-taking and the representation of subjectivity in narrative. The narratological discourse surrounding focalization provides an extensive conceptualization and reconfiguration of the term. Ever since its inception as a concept around fifty years ago, focalization has been applied to various media, among them graphic narrative. The multimodal nature of graphic narrative presents a particular challenge to focalization in terms of how subjectivity relates to visual representation of fictional minds. This thesis reviews focalization as a cognitive concept and introduces an annotation system that makes the term viable for empirical analysis. In addition, statistical tests and data interpretation – with the help of a graphic narrative corpus – investigate the applicability of the term as far as reading processes are concerned. The results are compared to the existing theory, thereby consolidating narratology with empirical methodology. The analysis of focalization as a cognitive concept serves as a case study for an experimental narratology in which the steps taken in this thesis may be applied to other narratological constituents in graphic narrative. The research argues for a new approach to narrative theory that develops insights from established terminology and reader assessment.
